Our holistic volunteer program blends education with adventure, giving you a chance to help care for our incredible big cats and immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of our 570-hectare sanctuary.

Located on our property, Leeuwenkrantz, surrounded by sandstone cliffs and the rugged Witteberg Mountains, Isindile is a true paradise for nature lovers.

Note: As a small, owner-managed sanctuary, our groups of volunteers are limited to 4 volunteers at any given time.

Volunteers will pay a fee, which includes accommodation in our comfortable and well-appointed self-catering cottages as well as transport to and from Bloemfontein airport (alternatively, private transport to and from the sanctuary will be required).

What You Need To Know

Minimum age 18 years
Fluent in spoken and written English
Minimum 2-week stay
Responsible for own travel costs
Passion for nature and big cats
Willingness to do physical outdoor work
Comfortable living in a remote rural area
Submit a concise CV as part of application

As a volunteer, you’ll engage in meaningful, hands-on work that directly contributes to the well-being of our animals and sanctuary, including:

Caring for and learning about Isindile’s big cats
Cleaning and maintaining enclosures
Assisting with feeding and meal preparation
Helping with carcass collection and meat processing
Clearing vegetation and removing invasive plants
Conducting fence-line inspections for security
Maintaining walking trails and firebreaks
Assisting in greenhouse gardening
General upkeep of the property

You’ll stay in one of our comfortable guest cottages featuring:

Covered veranda with breathtaking views
Two single beds
Bathroom with shower
Functional kitchenette
Cozy wood-burning fireplace
Lounge and dining area
Outdoor braai/barbecue facility

Accommodation is self-catering, and volunteers are responsible for keeping their space clean and managing groceries.

Each cottage can accommodate two people. In the event of being a single visitor, you may be required to share

Summer (Oct–Mar): Warm days, cool nights, occasional thunderstorms
Winter (Apr–Sep): Cold, dry days, often freezing nights

Isindile is located outside Fouriesburg, Free State Province:

340 km from OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg)
240 km from Bram Fischer International Airport (Bloemfontein)
