In December 2022, Brave was rescued by military volunteers during the war in Ukraine after his “owners” had fled the country. He had been kept as a pet at a private residence, with access to only 50m² of space. When the military volunteers found Brave, he was severely dehydrated and starved. He was taken to the Wild Animal Rescue Center, where he received necessary veterinary care and spent some time recovering. In November 2023, Brave was relocated to AAP Primadomus in Spain, where he received further veterinary care and behavioural rehabilitation.
In February 2024, after seeing footage of Brave, we immediately felt a very strong spiritual connection to him. We reached out to AAP Primadomus/Stichting AAP to offer Brave a forever home at ISINDILE. After a visit from the Stichting AAP outplacement coordinator, ISINDILE was approved as an “outplacement partner,” and plans were set in motion to translocate Brave to the sanctuary.
Brave arrived at Oliver Tambo Airport, Johannesburg, on 6 February 2025, where we met him and transported him home. Unfortunately, we arrived back at the sanctuary late that evening, and Brave had to spend the night in his travel crate. Early the following morning, we released him into his new home. He took some time to exit his crate but eventually came out and ran into his night shelter, where he spent the next few days sleeping and recovering from his long journey. During those first few days, he would only come out after sunset to take his food and explore his enclosure. The name “Brave” definitely suits this stunning leopard.
