Liena was kept in a small cage in Donetsk, Ukraine by a private owner who fled the country during the war. Soldiers found her abandoned and locked up in the small cage. They contacted the Wild Animal Rescue Centre asking whether to shoot her or not, as no one wanted to pick her up. Fortunately, sanity prevailed, and she was sedated and taken to the rescue facility where she spent some time recovering before being moved with lions Sem, Lova, and Pretzel to AAP Primadomus in Spain.

On arrival at AAP Primadomus, Liena seemed less nervous and traumatized than the other three lions and quickly started exploring her new home. She showed a keen interest in her three neighbors, especially Sem, and their caretakers decided to try introducing her to Sem. As they were both interested in each other, the introduction went smoothly and soon they were able to share an enclosure.

Liena came with partner Sem to ISINDILE. Liena is an active lioness who enjoys playing and stalking what she perceives as “prey.” She is also an adventurous lioness and will be the first to investigate new things in their enclosure. She loves lying on their wooden platform, soaking up the sunshine. Liena is not shy to join in when Sem starts to roar, and together with the other lions at ISINDILE, they form a beautiful “choir.”
