Mtazamaji arrived at ISINDILE with his brother Atlarela and lioness Bina after they were confiscated by GDARDE from a small backyard in Gauteng where they were being kept illegally. In March 2023, we were contacted by the NSPCA Wildlife Unit about the three lions, and we were able to offer them a lifelong home.
We arrived at the location early on the morning of 22 March 2023, where we were met by GDARDE, SPCA inspectors, and our consulting veterinarian, Dr Peter Caldwell. Dr Caldwell sedated the three lions and prepared them for transport back to ISINDILE.
Mtazamaji was the second to be released after his brother Atlarela. He was more uncertain about his new home and took some time before eventually running out of his crate to join Atlarela at the back of their enclosure.
True to his name, Mtazamaji is the quieter, more reserved brother who often prefers to observe from a distance and takes life quite seriously. He has a very close bond with Bina.
